A new unread notification indicator - Because users want to be aware of unread notifications, a new indicator is provided: an encircled dot at the bottom of the watch face. Mechanisms are available if you prefer to manage notifications on your own. You can use setHideNotificationIndicator to hide the default indicator whilst displaying your own or setShowUnreadCountIndicator to display a notification count in the status bar.

Note: The unread notifications indicator is not enabled in the production version of Wear 2.8.0. You are advised to test your implementation using the latest Wear emulator instead. Starting with the next consumer release of Wear (version 2.9.0), the unread notifications indicator will be displayed by default.

Hi everyone,

We are pleased to announce a new Android Wear update, Android Wear 2.9. This new update brings the following features:

- New notification preview complication which allows you to preview messages
- Improved glanceability in notification cards with longer titles

NOTE: This is an update on the Android Wear app on your phone, not the same as the OTA update on some watches. This update

- Restriction related to non-SDK methods and fields: To improve app compatibility, Android P has started the process of restricting access to non-SDK methods and fields. Developers should make plans to migrate away from these. If there is no public equivalent for your use case, please let us know.

- Dark UI system theme: To enhance glanceability, Wear OS has switched to a UI theme with a darker / black background for the notifications stream and system launcher since the start of the year. This is now also the default for the system theme and should improve the glanceability for wear apps. Developers should check the accessibility of their app's UI after this change.

- Limited background activity: To improve power, apps will no longer be allowed to run in the background unless the watch is on the charger. Developers should note that Wear OS is going further with Android's app standby feature than some other form factors. Exceptions to this include watch faces and complications that the user currently has selected. This feature will be rolled out gradually in the developer preview, so you may not see it immediately on your device, but should build your apps accordingly by removing background services.

- Turning off radios when off body: To improve power, bluetooth, WiFi, and cellular radios will be turned off when the watch is detected to be off body for an extended period of time. Again, this feature will be rolled out gradually so you may not initially see it on your device. If this feature causes challenges in your development process, you can disable the feature via adb; please follow the instructions in the release notes.

- WiFi off when BT is disconnected: To improve power, the device will no longer automatically connect to wifi when disconnected from bluetooth. Exceptions include if an app is requesting a high bandwidth network or if the watch is on the charger. This feature will be rolled out gradually so you may not initially see it on your device.

New mode: Enhanced battery saver

While a watch is in the enhanced battery saver mode, a default power-optimised watch face is displayed. All of the following are turned off:

- Radios
- The touch screen
- The tilt to wake feature

Users can see the time by short-pressing the side button. A long press allows the user to switch back to a fully-operational mode and perform tasks such as paying with NFC or replying to a message. Developers should assume that their apps, watch faces, and complication data providers are unavailable in the enhanced battery saver mode.

Limited background activity

To improve power, apps in the background are no longer allowed to start alarms and jobs unless the watch is on the charger. Exceptions include watch faces and active complications. Please use your app with the preview emulator or downloadable image and provide feedback in the Wear OS by Google issue tracker.

Note: If your app must always run, e.g., for background monitoring, we recommend that you use a foreground service by using the startForegroundService() method. See Background service limitations for more details. Using a foreground service currently is appropriate for exceptional use cases such as health monitoring.

Improved app compatibility

In order to improve app compatibility, Android P has begun implementing certain restrictions on the use of non-SDK interfaces. You should make plans to migrate away from non-SDK methods and fields. If no public equivalent is available for your use case, please let us know.
Dark UI system theme

Since the beginning of 2018, Wear OS has switched to a default UI theme that has a darker background for the notifications stream and system launcher. This change is intended to improve glanceability for your apps, and you should check your app's accessibility with this new UI theme.

[*]Swipe left: Google Fit’s new fitness-tracking rings
[*]Swipe up: notifications
[*]Swipe down: Quick Settings shortcuts
[*]Long press on the watchface: change watchface
[*]Short press the main button: see all apps
[*]Long press the main button: invoke Google Assistant to ask questions via voice

Im Interview mit "tom's guide" hat Miles Barr - "Director of engineering for Wear OS" bei Google - weitere Details um die Zukunft von WearOS offenbart:

Google Assistant is at the forefront of the Wear OS software update rolling out to watches in the next month, with a proactive screen that displays the information you need for the upcoming day, week or even month, depending on how you use Google Assistant and what information Google learns from your usage of its other services.

The Wear OS update works to solve performance issues with quick-glance screens, so you don’t have to dig into the app menu to open Google Fit, for example.

The next big project for Google is improving smartwatch battery life. Another software upgrade early next year will address that, Barr said, using many of the same strategies Google relies on to optimize battery life for Android phones.

“We want to move away from version numbers,” Barr said. “Version numbers led us into a trap where we can only update once a year. Wear OS experience is evolving, and this is the start of that evolution. We want to keep rolling out improvements on a regular basis so users aren’t pent up waiting.”

WearOS 2.1 wird ab sofort ausgerollt.

Busy day? Every minute matters. The new #WearOSbyGoogle design gives you a helping hand when you need it most, convenient access to your notifications, #GoogleFit, and more. Rolling out now.

Google hat soeben das System-Update "H" angekündigt:

Hello Wear OS Community,
In the next few months, you should soon see a system update on your device! As part of this new release, here’s a list of new features and changes you’ll notice when you update:

Battery Saver Mode Updates:
This update extends your battery life even further by turning on Battery Saver to only display the time once your battery falls below 10%.

Improved Off Body Efficiency:
After 30 minutes of inactivity your watch will go into deep sleep mode to conserve battery.

Smart App Resume for all Apps:
You can now easily pick up where you left off across all apps on your watch.

Two Step Power Off:
You can now turn off your watch in two easy steps. To turn off your watch, simply hold the power button until you see the power off screen and then select 'power off' or 'restart'
