Tell us what you think
As the CyanogenMod developers continue work on CyanogenMod 7 and CyanogenMod 9, we are taking a more methodological approach to CyanogenMod 9s development.
As many of you know, ADWLauncher and CMSettings in CyanogenMod 7 had a ton of options, some of which I am sure you guys never used or even knew what they did. The menus were cluttered, and options and settings were often not where you would have initially expected them to be. This adds to user frustration, confusion, and a learning curve that shouldnt be necessary to enjoy the benefits of running an AOSP/CyanogenMod ROM. So for CyanogenMod 9 the team has decided to put more thought into the User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) for users.
As such, in discussion with the team, I have been asked to provide a framework for this new UX/UI vision, and try to enforce that as best as possible. Gerrit submissions for CyanogenMod 9 will undergo a bit more scrutiny to "usability" in addition to functionality and "cool factor". Now, this isnt to imply we will be rejecting things left and right, just taking a moment to put some thought into it. And we will still be as customizable as you would expect from a CyanogenMod release.
In order to explain our vision as best as possible, two wiki pages have been created to explain our thought process and proposed layout (mainly regarding the Settings application). These are guidelines in place to reduce any friction with future Gerrit submissions. Likewise, this is still in the early phases, a lot of these are in open debate amongst team members; we all want what is best for CyanogenMod moving forward.
So, with that, I turn to you guys. Look over the proposed guidelines and layout. Leave feedback here or on the CyanogenMod Wiki talkpages for this new standard and proposed layout.
Of key interest for this post is the treatment of CyanogenMod 9s "DeviceParts" (e.g., AriesParts, DefyParts, etc.) These settings are very much device specific, and the handling of them moving forward has been a hot-topic in the IRC.
Distilling it, there are 3 Camps/Options that have emerged:
1. Spread DeviceParts features to appropriate existing Settings categories (Agreed to be the most ideal solution, but has huge technical issues behind it.)
2. Remove DeviceParts to a standalone app
3. Lump DeviceParts as one category in Settings
This is a community ROM, from the community, for the community; we encourage feedback and discussion regarding which path, you, the end-user see as best for CyanogenMod.
Please keep discussions civil, we are adults and can have debates without childishness. Also, keep in mind, any decision made will likely affect a lot of "AOSP" ROMs throughout the community, so choose wisely.
tl;dr - Just a heads up. I will be the UX Lead within the CyanogenMod ecosystem. If you have any ideas or concerns related to UX be free to message me on here or on the wiki page linked.
